We understand people who are considering joining the club or are completely new to the athletics club scene may have lots of questions and concerns. These may be about training, club sessions, the speed of our groups, what is expected and much more. Below you will find the answers to some of the most common questions. If you don't find what you're looking for here, we are always happy to answer questions by email at ItchenSpitfiresRc@gmail.com and we will try to respond as soon as possible.
A. Yes. There is no need to book in! Just turn up and ask one of our Itchen Spitfire Run Leaders, you will recognise them by their bright orange tops. They will have a brief chat with you to find out about your current ability and advise which group would be best for you. If you are thinking of joining us we would be happy for you to come along to two free taster sessions to give you the chance to experience the different sessions we have to offer. We have runners of all abilities and we welcome everyone to run with us. If you like what you see after your two taster sessions and wish to join the club to continue running with us please see our Become a Member pages for more information. Everyone is really friendly and, before a session, they are likely to all be chatting amongst themselves. Don't worry though, you will soon feel like part of the Itchen Spitfire RC family.
A. Yes you can, you can always use us as a second claim club.
A. It is also recommended, that if you cannot yet run a 5k, you join our beginners sessions.
A. Yes we welcome both Male and Female members, and have a good friendly spirit around the club so regardless of gender we are all Spitfires!
A. We have a number of membership options available all of which are outlined in the membership forms which can be found here: Become a Member. When renewing your membership, you will need to consider whether you also want to affiliate to English Athletics at an additional cost. If you choose to affiliate, there are no discounts for family members, though not everybody in the family will need to affiliate even if you have a number of family members who are in the club.
A. Affiliation provides insurance cover related to 'athletics activities', including training, competitions, administrative meetings and fund raising activities organised by a club. It allows you to compete in races you might not otherwise be able to enter, particularly track and field events, which are often exclusive to, affiliated athletes. There are also entry discounts on UK Athletics licensed road and multi-terrain events.
If you run in the Hampshire Cross Country League or any championship events you will need to affiliate to participate. We will be entering events as a club that only affiliated athletes can enter.
If you only wish to run socially, and take part in training sessions but not races, there is no need to affiliate. If you are a second claim member you should affiliate with your first claim club if necessary.
A. We meet every Monday & Thursday, Sessions start at 6:45pm so we ask that you arrive as early as possible. Sessions normally last around 1 hour. Our meeting place is Woolston Millenium Garden, Bridge Road, Southampton SO19 9RH.
A. The club serves several purposes, running with others provides safety in numbers and training in a social environment and can provide encouragement and competition for those that want to be competitive.
The club exists to improve the health & well being of our members, many of our members join to get fit, lose weight, be social, train for a race and many just to have fun!
A. This is a really common question, the great thing about running is it is a really cheap form of keeping fit, all you really need is some suitable clothing i.e Shorts T-Shirt and some running trainers, for those that are new to running come along and try it out, but if you like it and start to increase the time you spend running we would recommend that you visit a running shop to receive a gait analysis which will determine the correct style of shoe for your feet.
A. Yes we periodically run beginners groups throughout the year, the course last 9 weeks and will take you from non runner to a 5k run/race at the end of the term after which we would then hopefully move you into our Thursday groups, there is a very small charge for our beginners but all proceeds go towards club funds.
A: You need to fill in our membership form and bring it to our membership secretary on a club night along with payment. You can find the membership form here: Become a Member
A: Yes anyone can buy our training kit but only our members can purchase race tops and vests.
